Computer networks are used for a variety of different applications. Such applications can include distributed file systems, distributed databases, messaging, enterprise applications, and so on. Different applications may generate different types of network traffic patterns. For example, a distributed file system may send a large file to a client computer in response to the client""s request. In another example, the same client computer may generate a large number of requests to a remote database. In either of these applications, the network traffic generated may be large, and the client computer may receive a large amount of network traffic as a result of the requests.
In the past, network traffic patterns have been used to monitor network traffic, including traffic between a server and a client computer, in order to identify problems with network traffic patterns, such as slow transfers, resource bottlenecks, and so on.
In view of the above, a method for real-time network traffic monitoring and data collection is provided. The method and system of the present invention can be used in a variety of different applications, such as to monitor and collect data associated with network traffic. In one embodiment, the present invention provides a system for monitoring a client computer from the server side, in which the system includes a monitoring server, a network interface unit, and a central processing unit. The network interface unit is coupled to the client computer. The monitoring server is coupled to the network interface unit. The central processing unit is coupled to the network interface unit, to the monitoring server, and to a network.
In one embodiment, the central processing unit is programmed to receive a communication session, and to determine the identity of the client computer and the identity of the server computer from the received communication session. The central processing unit is programmed to send a request to the monitoring server, in which the request includes the identity of the client computer, the identity of the server computer, and an indication of the type of communication session. The central processing unit is programmed to receive a response from the monitoring server, in which the response includes the identity of the client computer, the identity of the server computer, and a monitoring data packet. be359ba680
